Finding Your Niche as an Esthetician

If you’re anything like me, you’re on a search to find something you love to do. Life is short and you have to live it to the fullest, while succeeding in a career you love! When I was looking for a new career, many things came to mind, but my gut kept coming back to working in a spa. I didn’t know what that meant and I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but after a few years, when the feeling was still in my core, I took the leap and signed up for esthetician school.

I had one thing in mind: I was going to do chemical peels with a top dermatologist in Beverly Hills. Once I achieved that goal, I quickly learned – to my surprise – that chemicals, ingredients and all that came with doing chemical peels was a complete bore to me. Feeling discouraged, I quit that job and started thinking about what I would do next.

Thinking I might need to change careers again, I talked to my instructor at school. She said to me, “Candi, you’re a waxer, wait until we start teaching waxing, you’re going to love it!” I thought ABSOLUTELTY NOT!!! I’m not waxing people’s privates…gross! However, after my first in-school waxing experience during which I waxed a man’s back, I was proven wrong. I walked out from that experience with a smile on my face fist pumping the air… I WAS a waxer; my niche had arrived!

Little did I know that waxing a back would lead me to doing male Brozilians, but that’s exactly what happened. I saw the need for male waxers; there were 30 girls in my class and not one of them said they’d be willing to wax men “down there.” I called local waxing places and none of them offered male waxing. I knew at that moment that I was going to have to go all in and perfect this little niche I had discovered.

Becoming a male waxologist was going to be my “in” into a top spa in Los Angeles. I signed up for every male waxing class I could find (and there weren’t many) and then I did FREE male Brazilian waxing for months on dozens of men so that I could practice, practice, practice. Sometimes guys would tip me, but a majority of the time I was doing these services for free. I chose to look at it as if I was providing a service to someone who was going to help me to get an amazing job one day. I have to admit, I was lucky because I had an instant rapport with guys.

It was easy for me to get them to relax and to trust that I was going to be the best, even when I had no idea what I was doing. It took three months of free waxes before I had the confidence to search for the perfect location to work. I was well aware and was keeping in mind that it is just as important to do something you love as it is to do it at a place where you love to work.

Finding my niche and following that little voice in the back of my head served me right by leading me to Queen Bee Salon & Spa. There isn’t a day that I’m not in love with my job. I absolutely love waxing men and love my male clients. If you’ve been thinking about a career as an esthetician, I applaud you and encourage you to follow your dream.
